Membership Categories


Membership of the Society falls in to four categories:

  • Ordinary membership; for academic staff, mathematicians in other occupations and all those with a deep commitment to mathematics and an interest in mathematical research.听听
  • Reciprocity membership; for those not normally resident in the UK and who are also members of an overseas mathematical society having a Reciprocity agreement with the LMS.

  • Associate membership; for postgraduates and early career mathematicians who are within three years of completing their PhD.听

Subscription rates for the Membership Session 1 November 2023 - 31 October 2024听

Tiered Ordinary Membership rates for current and new members

The Society offers three tiers of Ordinary membership rates and members who pay the Ordinary membership rate can confirm听onlinewhich membership rate they wish to pay based on whether their annual professional income falls within the following ranges:

  • Above 拢70,000 per annum: Ordinary (high) member rate.
  • Between 拢40,000-拢70,000 per annum: Ordinary (middle) member rate.
  • Up to 拢40,000 per annum: Ordinary (low) member rate

The Society will not collect any data on members鈥 actual professional income nor require proof of earnings. Instead, Ordinary members are asked to advise either via their online member record or the subscription form which tier of Ordinary membership subscription they will be paying. For members who pay by direct debit, we encourage you to update this information by 14 October 2023.

The Society offers a pro-rata of the full membership rate to new members based on their date of election to membership during the Membership Session, as shown below:

These fees cover membership from 1 November 2023听until 31 October 2024.

Please note that the default subscription fee for all new Ordinary members will be Ordinary (Middle) member rate so members are asked to advise us of any changes at your earliest convenience. All members can amend their tier type听via either their听online member record听or by completing and returning the subscription form.听


Ordinary Membership is available to:

  • Academic staff of a university or similar institution in the United Kingdom who are substantially engaged in teaching and research in mathematics (including all its diverse applications).
  • Mathematicians in other occupations, whether or not they are currently employed, who have a higher degree in mathematics, or who use mathematics in their work at a comparable level, or whose work would benefit substantially from the Society's activities in promoting and extending mathematical knowledge.
  • All those with a deep commitment to mathematics and an interest in mathematical research.
  • Others whom Council considers to have contributed substantially to the objects of the Society.

ReciprocityMembership is available to:

  • Members of some overseas Mathematical Societies who are not normally resident in the UK.听They听may join under the terms of various Reciprocity Agreements, although Council reserves the right to consider each application individually.听

Any mathematical society not appearing on the above list听 interested in entering into a reciprocity agreement should write to membership@lms.ac.uk

Associate Membership is available to:

  • Early career mathematicians who are within three years of obtaining their PhD in mathematics (full-time equivalent and excluding any career breaks)
  • Research students who are studying for a PhD in mathematics.
  • Research students who are studying for a MSc in mathematics or a Masters degree with a significant mathematical content.

Associate (Undergraduate) Membership is available to:

  • Undergraduate students who are studying for a degree in mathematics or a degree with a significant mathematical content.

Council also has the authority to elect Honorary Members from distinguished mathematicians who are not normally resident within the United Kingdom.
